The Associate Director for Student Care is an integral member of the Residence Life leadership team and specializes in case management, utilizing best practices in social work. Working across department and division lines to coordinate care for students of concern living on campus, this position will work closely with the Care Team Coordinator to provide leadership and guidance to residence hall directors in their roles as non-clinical case managers. Serving on a central office team that includes the director of residence life and associate directors for housing operations and community standards, this position will also be involved with residence life work related to department leadership, supervision of professional staff, and program coordination vital to the student experience.

CORE DUTIES

Student Care
Collaborate with University’s Care Team Coordinator and Director of Residence Life to coordinate support for at-risk students.

Supervise and support residence hall directors in their roles as non-clinical case managers.

Serve as an active member of University’s Early Alert and Behavioral Intervention & Threat Assessment teams.

Connect students with resources through key partners and resources internally and externally to ensure an early intervention approach.

Communicate in a timely and effective manner with campus partners, particularly academic affairs, who are integral to the network of care and support provided to students.

Oversee a graduate student from an area master’s program in social work
Provide appropriate orientation and training opportunities for the MSW student’s field placement at the University of Portland.

Prepare for and provide at least one hour of weekly individual supervision for the MSW student.

Complete quarterly field evaluations of the MSW student.

Department Leadership
Coordinate Residence Life departmental initiatives related to student leadership, development, and formation. These include, but are not limited to, training and development of Resident Assistants and management of the residence hall-based co-curricular Ambassador Student Leadership program.

Assist with the on-going training and development of Residence Life professional and paraprofessional staff.

Provide direct supervision and guidance to full-time residence hall directors.

Serve in an on-call rotation with director and other associate directors to provide administrative backup for emergencies and other evening and weekend consultations with residence hall staff.

Participate in other departmental and/or University programs as assigned, which may include serving as a University hearing officer in the student conduct or Title IX process or serving as an instructor for the resident assistant leadership course (if qualified).

REQUIREMENTS

Education and Experience
Required: Master's degree in Social Work from an accredited institution.

Required: Demonstrated knowledge of case management systems and experience with referrals, documentation, and active follow-up.

Required: Experience in residence life or a closely-related student affairs unit.

Preferred: Prior student conduct and Title IX experience.

Or a combination of equivalent education and/or experience.

Certifications and Licenses
Required: License in Social Work.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Significant knowledge of student development theory and issues typically encountered by college students.

Knowledge of mental health and wellness issues in college student population.

Knowledge of assessment, risk management, and violence prevention strategies and approaches and how to apply them in a university setting.

Ability to work effectively with college-age students.

Knowledge of Title IX.

Demonstrated ability to deal with crisis situations.

Demonstrated data and records management skills.

Knowledge of current legal issues in higher education.

Experience working with distressed individuals within a higher education or community setting.

Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Strong organizational and time management skills; excellent attention to detail and accuracy.

Strong critical thinking, problem solving, and decision-making skills.

Ability to consistently handle and follow through with multiple projects and assignments and meet deadlines.

Ability to be flexible and adaptable to changing priorities; ability to effectively handle multiple projects concurrently; ability to function effectively in a busy work environment.

Ability to work independently, be proactive, and engage in continuing professional development as necessary.

Strong critical-thinking, problem-solving, decision-making, and judgment skills.

Ability to learn and apply applicable federal, state, University, and other regulations and policies (including FERPA).

Ability to work independently but also to constructively receive supervisory direction and work collaboratively and effectively in a team setting.
